Do you need to fly to Miami for bunion surgery?

Foot before and after bunion correction surgery, showing a straighter big toe

When I first started seeing patients in Grand Cayman, I heard the same story again and again. Someone had lived with a painful bunion for years, knew they probably needed an operation, and kept putting it off because it meant flying to Miami, Houston or London to get it done.

That’s a lot to ask. Flights, hotels, time off work, someone to come with you, and then the worry of travelling home on a freshly operated foot. It’s no surprise people wait.

You can now have it done here

I visit Grand Cayman several times a year and operate at NovoClinic in George Town. The operation I do here is the same minimally invasive (keyhole) bunion correction I do on Harley Street. I’ve done more than 1,200 of them, and the technique, the instruments and the aftercare are the same wherever I’m working.

That means you have your consultation, your surgery and your check-ups on the island, close to home.

What about follow-up when you’re in London?

This is the question I get asked most. Between visits I keep in touch by video call, and the NovoClinic team are on hand locally for dressings and anything that needs looking at in person. I plan surgery dates around my visits so the key check-ups fall when I’m here.

Is it covered by insurance?

For many people, yes. NovoClinic can help with pre-authorisation, so bring your insurance details to your first appointment and the team will look into it for you.

The first step

Not every bunion needs an operation. The first appointment is about working out what’s going on, what your options are, and whether surgery makes sense for you. If it doesn’t, I’ll tell you.
